Advice:
-
Before planting: store cloves in a cool, dry, dark place, safe from frost.
-
Soil and exposure: choose a sunny spot with rich, loose, well-drained soil. Avoid fresh manure or nitrogen-rich fertilisers, which can cause rot. Rotate crops, avoiding garlic and other alliums for 2–3 years.
-
Planting: gently separate the cloves without damaging their skins, plant them pointy side up, 10–15 cm apart and 2–3 cm deep. On heavy soil, use a 10 cm ridge to improve drainage. Use the larger outer cloves for better yields; the smaller inner cloves can also be planted but may produce smaller bulbs.
-
Care: water only in case of drought during bulb formation (May). Weed if necessary. In June, leaves can be tied or bent down to encourage bulb sizing.
-
Harvest: when the leaves turn yellow and begin to flop, harvest in dry weather. Let bulbs cure for a few days in the field or in a well-ventilated place.
-
Storage: keep garlic in a cool, dry and airy spot. Braiding the stems makes it easy to hang and improves winter storage.
Tip: garlic is a natural repellent and an excellent companion plant for your other crops.
