More info
Sow carrots March through July – or from mid-February under cloche – in light, stone-free soil that was improved the previous autumn with well-rotted compost (fresh manure causes forked roots). Drill seeds 0.5–1 cm (¼ in) deep in rows 20–25 cm (8–10 in) apart, firm gently and water with a fine spray. Once seedlings appear, thin to 3 cm (1¼ in) for baby carrots or 5–6 cm (2–2½ in) for main-crop roots. Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged, mulch to prevent crusting, and grow in full sun to enhance sweetness. Harvest 70–120 days after sowing – first baby carrots from June, storage types from October onward.
