Sow from mid-June to late July at 1 cm depth, preferably in modules (better germination, fewer slugs), or directly in drills 30–40 cm apart. Transplant or thin at 4 true leaves to 25–40 cm per variety. Grow in fresh, fertile, well-drained soil with regular watering. Harvest from late summer until autumn, before the first frost, for crisp heads and optimal flavor.
